As some of you may know we’ve been toying around with a weird idea for a few years now: we want to start a hackerspace in Iasi.
I don’t know what we’ve been waiting for but the wait is over.
Brace yourselves, Hackerspace Iasi is comming.
The IT community in Iasi has been growing a lot in the past few years, as can be seen from the countless groups and meetups. There’s now a group for every major discipline, a meetup for every major language or framework, and that’s great, especially if we look back 3 or 4 years, when there weren’t any.
The issue with these groups is that they only exist for a few hour every month, and they rarely happen twice in the same place. This is mostly because these events depend on the goodwill of 4 or 5 larger IT companies.
What we’re still missing is an independent, permanent “space”, where members of the community can come together to learn, create, debate or just hang out.
This is where we come in. We’re pushing on several fronts to get this community going, and we need all the help we can get.
The first thing that we’re looking for is a space to rent. Ideally it should be an industrial space, easily accessible, and clean enough to host classes or presentations but cheap enough so we can afford it.
Once we identify a space we will need a core group of members to help shoulder the rent and utilities bills and maybe help out with setting up the space. (Most of the spaces we’ve already seen required “some work” to make them habitable.)
We will also need a lot of help with gear and furniture. We already have a lot of computers, electronics and metalworking tools but we have no desks, chairs, shelving or media equipment (projector, tv, sound system).
Over the next few months we will organize a few workshops such as “Arduino Basics” and “Building the Start Here Robot”.
